| A Dangerous Method. Cinematique. Main Stage. $7. General Admission. |
 |
7:30PM-9:05PM |
|

On the eve of World War I, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery. Drawn from true-life events, A Dangerous Method explores the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the beautiful but disturbed young woman who comes between them. Critically praised, the film is directed by Daven Cronenberg and written by Christopher Hampton.
"It's a fiercely thoughtful film, a movie of ideas that understands how powerful ideas can be.”

 |
7:30PM-11:00PM |
|
On March 10, the Cape Fear Jazz Society with major support from the UNCW Upperman African American Cultural Center will present two jazz greats with ties to Wilmington. The Heath Brothers (Jimmy and Albert “Tootie”) will perform at Thalian Hall with the concert starting at 7:30 pm. Opening act will be UNCW Distinguished Professor of Jazz, and master percussionist, Joe Chambers and his All Stars featuring Benny Hill, Doug Irving, and Brad Merritt.
The Heath Brothers are a dynasty of jazz and musical excellence. Percy, a bassist and the eldest who is deceased) began his career playing with Dizzy Gillespie’s band. There he met and joined a quartet that became one of the most famous groups of the 1950s through the 1970s—The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). Jimmy, a tenor saxophonist, has played with may jazz greats, is a composer and arranger and jazz educator having led the creation of the Jazz Program at Queens College in New York. Tootie, the youngest, has also played with jazz greats, regularly serves as a faculty member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop and has acted in TV shows and feature films. All three brothers have played on numerous recordings as leaders of groups such as MJQ or The Heath Brothers or as sidemen. Percy and Jimmy were born and spent their early lives in Wilmington. They went to Williston High School and played in the legendary marching band.

8:00PM-10:00PM |

A night of brass, class, rhythm & swing in a cavalcade of Big Band hits kicked up a notch under the guidance and indisputable finesse of jazz master John Brown. With the group’s new recording “Setting Standards” and the Rodrigo Dorfman documentary film “One Night in Kernersville” about the making of the album, a film which walked away with the Jury Award for Best Short Film at the Full Frame Documentary Festival, the John Brown Jazz Orchestra is riding a musical wave that’s full-tilt swing. There are “big bands” – and then there’s John Brown’s big band. No confusion there!

Another Tony Award winner, La Cage Aux Folles wraps up the season. After twenty years of un-wedded bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse, get a bit of both when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted right wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the family business: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as straight when he meets the family of the bride-to-be, but Albin has other plans. By turns uproarious and heartfelt, this modern musical classic features a triumphant score by Jerry Herman the composer of Hello, Dolly! and Mame.

Tony, a middle-aged vineyard owner, has everything a fella needs to call himself happy — except the love of a good woman. All that changes when he meets Rosabella, a young waitress in San Francisco. He falls for her at first sight, but she doesn’t remember him. After months of exchanging letters she asks Tony to send her a picture, but he is afraid she will not love him as he is so he sends a picture of his young, handsome foreman, Joe. Misunderstandings, mistakes, and a May-December love story fraught with deception yet full of romance unfold until the show’s happy conclusion.
Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying) created his masterpiece with this touching love story. Full of soaring romantic melodies and catchy show-stoppers, (including “Standing on the Corner” and “Big D”) The Most Happy Fella is a melodic and lyric triumph that is wise to the ways of the heart.
