Thalian Hall forms the east wing of Wilmington's impressive City Hall and is located 4 blocks east of the Cape Fear River in Wilmington's historic central business district. It may be accessed from 3rd, Princess, 4th, or Chestnut Streets. The official entrance is 310 Chestnut St. Thalian Hall is in walking distance to a number of fine restaurants. Getting There West from Raleigh and I-95: Take I-40 east until it turns into Highway #132 to the overpass at the intersection of #132 and Highway #17. Exit off the overpass headed south on to Market St. to Downtown Wilmington. Continue until 3rd St. and take a right and travel 2 blocks north. Thalian Hall/City Hall will be on your right. West from Charlotte: Take Highway #421 or Highways #74/#76 west and cross the Cape Fear River onto North 3rd St. continue to Chestnut St. and Thalian Hall/City Hall will be on your left. East from Pleasure Island: Take Highway #421 to Downtown Wilmington where it will turn into 3rd St. Continue on 3rd St. until Chestnut St. which is two blocks past Market St. and Thalian Hall/City Hall will be on your right. South from Myrtle Beach: Take Highway #17 north and cross the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge turn left on south 3rd St. and continue north until Chestnut St. which is two blocks past Market St. Thalian Hall/City Hall will be on your right. The son of slaves who had no formal training, his performance featured a powerful new work, The Battle of Manassas. Bethune was said to be only 12 years old, a claim which a reviewer for the Wilmington Daily Journal doubted, saying no one the young could have such a voice. Thalian Facts: Thalian Hall opened on October 12, 1858 with the 19th century favorite: John Tobin’s, "The Honey-Moon" and to this day remains the oldest continuously operated theatre in NC. |
