The Main Stage

"MAIN STAGE refers to the original Thalian Hall built in 1858. This traditional proscenium theatre has full fly capabilities and seats 682 people on three levels."

The Main Stage and facilities may be rented for a wide variety of performance and event activities. Rates vary depending on daily vs. weekly use, rehearsal vs. performance use and private organizations vs. not-for-profit organizations. Rental does not include Box Office fee, technical labor, piano tuning, or special equipment. Thalian Hall provides ushers, front of house, and concessionaires. Rental clients must make application to the Executive Director at 910-343-3660 in the business office of the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Inc.

The Studio

"The STUDIO THEATRE is a multi-purpose black box theatre with variable seating depending on how the room is used. Though used primarily for small theatrical productions it is also available for intimate meetings, receptions and concerts. "

The Ballroom

"The Ballroom at Thalian Hall is an elegant two-story space located on the 2nd floor of City Hall and is the regular meeting space for the Wilmington City Council. When not in use by the City it is available to rental for meetings, receptions, and acoustical concerts."

The Ballroom or Council Chambers at Thalian Hall is a very elegant space, perfect for private parties of up to 200 guests. Located on the second floor of the City Hall wing of the Thalian Hall/City Hall complex, the Ballroom has two-story palladium windows with a panoramic view of downtown Wilmington, wool carpeting, a parquet dance floor, a small catering kitchen and large washroom facilities in the Mezzanine lobby for the comfort of your guests.

The Cinematique

Thalian Hall's Main Stage is equipped with a 35 mm projection and sound system. The Cinematique film series is collaboration between the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts and WHQR Public Radio providing a venue for independent, art, foreign and classic films. A different film is presented twice a month on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights at 7:30 PM. For Cinematique dates and other film Events such as the Cucalorus Festival and the Cape Fear International Film Festival go to the Thalian Hall Calendar of Events.

on this date…October 24 (1870) Edwin Forrest, tragedian of the old school, was the first American to achieve fame both here and abroad. Noted for his Shakespearean roles, he began a 3-day appearance at Thalian Hall in Richlieu. Damon and Pythias and Pythias and King Lear followed on successive nights.

Thalian Facts: Of the 40 theatres and concert halls along the East Coast designed by the architect, John Montague Trimble. Thalian Hall is the only surviving example left.
